About This Event / イベントについて
明治神宮の初詣 is the busiest first shrine visit in Japan. The shrine’s own hatsumode page sets the 2026–27 clock. 31 December: open 06:40, then overnight with no close. 1 January: close 18:30. 2 and 3 January: 06:40–18:00. 4 January: 06:40–17:30. From 5 January: 06:40–16:20 (the usual January close, extended during hatsumode). Times can move. Phone 03-3379-5511. Precinct entry is free. The inner garden (Gyoen / Kiyomasa well) is extra and uses a different door: east gate on 1–3 January, north gate from the 4th. Gyoen hours: 1 Jan 08:00–16:30, 2–3 Jan 08:30–16:00, from 4 Jan 09:00–16:00.
Three gates. Harajuku south: JR Harajuku and Metro Meiji-jingumae, about 1 minute. Yoyogi north: JR Yoyogi, Toei Oedo Yoyogi, Metro Kita-sando, about 5 minutes. Sangubashi west: Odakyu Sangubashi, about 5 minutes. Peak queues: 22:00 on the 31st through 03:00 on the 1st, and after 10:00 on the first three days. The shrine asks people to spread visits. Temporary chozuya. Ofuda and omamori desks move to the parking in front of Meiji Jingu Kaikan (Harajuku / Yoyogi side) and to the west-approach lawn (Sangubashi side). Fureai plaza stalls from 31 December. Forest Terrace including Café Mori no Terrace opens from 1 January. No cars in the precinct on the first three days. From the 5th, cars only at the Yoyogi gate. Car purification from 10 January.
Reiwa 8 is the year of the horse. Eto bells and ema ¥1,000 each, limited. Personal kigan from ¥10,000 on 1–3 January, from ¥5,000 after the 4th. New Year first kigan from 01:00 on the 1st. Taiko for the petitioner on the first three days except 04:00–09:00 on the 1st for rites. Museum: 1 Jan 10:00–18:30 (open despite Thursday), 2–3 Jan 10:00–18:00, 4–5 Jan 10:00–17:30, from 6 Jan 10:00–16:30. Last entry 30 minutes before close.
Shibuya scramble has no organised countdown. The ward has cancelled the street party for a sixth year and wraps Hachiko again. Street drinking 18:00–05:00. Traffic control from about 20:00 on 31 December between the scramble and Miyamasuzaka. Konno Hachimangu on Miyamasuzaka is the local ujigami if you want a shorter queue after Jingu. Do not treat Center-gai as hatsumode. Gate pick and why the scramble is the wrong night sit in the news note. Shrine page: meijijingu.or.jp/hatsumoude.
