渋谷マルイ

Shibuya Marui is a department store at 1 Chome-22-6 Jinnan, a short walk from Shibuya Station, that has served the area for over fifty years. Operated by the Marui Group, it traditionally offered fashion, cosmetics and lifestyle goods across multiple floors, catering to style-conscious Tokyoites. In 2022 the original building closed for a major rebuild. The new design, created by Foster + Partners, envisions a nine-storey timber-and-steel structure that aims to set a benchmark for sustainable retail architecture in Japan. The project signals a bold shift towards environmentally responsible department store design. Whilst the redevelopment is under way, visitors should check the Marui Group website for updates on the reopening timeline. The surrounding Jinnan neighbourhood remains full of shops, cafes and smaller Marui-run outlets such as Shibuya Modi, so there is still plenty of retail exploration to be had nearby.
