渋チカ（地下商店街）

Shibuchika, short for Shibuya Chikagai, is a compact underground shopping arcade that has been part of Shibuya's fabric since it first opened in December 1957, making it Japan's oldest underground shopping street. It lies directly beneath the famous Scramble Crossing, accessed via the Tokyo Metro A5, B5, A7 and B7 exits, and remains a curious blend of the historic and the everyday. Around thirty privately owned shops line the corridors, offering everything from fashion accessories and cosmetics to snacks and everyday essentials. The atmosphere is distinctly retro compared with the slick department stores above ground, and that is precisely its charm. You will also find the Foodshow section, operated by Tokyu Department Store, selling cakes, fresh produce and deli items that are popular with local office workers on their way home. Shibuchika operates from 10:00 to 20:00 and is a useful shortcut when navigating between Shibuya Station's various lines, especially on rainy days. It may not be a destination shopping experience, but it rewards a wander if you enjoy uncovering the slightly weathered, authentic side of Tokyo that most guidebooks overlook.
